This project began during an open-studio performance/installation titled A Room of One’s Own // Rent Free in 2023. It has continued, and is ongoing in different spaces as opportunities arise.
Background: In 2023 I had a solo show at the Anna Leonowens Gallery, marking the end of my time at NSCAD. “A Room of One’s Own // Rent Free” was a week-long open-studio performance reflecting on process, production and space. During this performance, I began work on the series titled “Rent Free” , a series of folded paper cubes (scanned and printed copies of the pages of my sketchbooks filled over the 6 years I was enrolled at NSCAD). The cubes I created during the show were, as they were made, put up for adoption. Visitors to the gallery were asked to sign an Art Caregiver’s Agreement in order to adopt a single cube. Each Caregiver has been given a profile on this website, with information regarding the specific cube they adopted, as well as documentation of the cube in the space it now lives.
The prospective caregiver agrees:
- The art is to live in a private residence (or a commercial setting occupied by the caregiver)
- To provide the art with sufficient and reasonable space, care and consideration
- Never to strike or otherwise harm the art
- Never to have the art declawed
- Spaying or neutering the art is discouraged. The caregiver is invited to create art inspired by, referencing or influenced by the art. The caregiver is furthermore encouraged to generally engage in acts of making of all kinds.
- To ensure that if the art is damaged, lost or stolen, to attempt to either repair, or recover the art if reasonably possible. The caregiver may contact the Artist for assistance if needed.
- If the art must be relinquished for any reason by the caregiver, they MUST NOT turn the art over to garbage collection services, yardsales, or use the work as fire starter, but MUST return the art to the Artist. If the phone number and/or address for the Artist listed on this form is no longer operative, the caregiver will make a good faith effort to locate and contact the Artist.
- Transferring ownership of the art is acceptable only in the form of a gift. The art shall not, under any circumstance, be sold/traded by the caregiver.
- The Caregiver gives the Artist permission to use their first name as part of the documentation of the artwork online.
- I understand that failure to perform the foregoing agreement will constitute a breach of contract. In the event of any such breach of contract, I authorize the Artist to reclaim possession of the adopted art.
In return for the above conditions, the Artist agrees to allow the caregiver to adopt the above mentioned art.
