A Room of One’s Own // Rent Free

Jun 13 – 17, 2023

Anna Leonowens Gallery – Gallery 3

“A Room of One’s Own // Rent Free is a week-long open-studio performance reflecting on process, production and space. During the exhibition Denil will produce a series of works in Gallery 3 during regular gallery hours. The space will be arranged and furnished as an active studio environment, including work-purposed furniture, works in progress, various sculptures, drawings, inspirations and tools. The performance and the new work produced combined present an active process of reflection on the importance of having a personal, secure space of one’s own.”

During this performance, I began work on the series titled Rent Free , a series of folded paper cubes (scanned and printed copies of the pages of my sketchbooks filled over the past 6 years, the time period I was enrolled at NSCAD). The cubes I created during the show were, as they were made, put up for adoption. Visitors to the gallery were asked to sign an Art Caregiver’s Agreement in order to adopt a single cube. To see the artworks and caregiver profiles, see this page: Rent Free: Art Caregivers / Adopted Cubes
